Special Education

The Student Services Department of Notre Dame College School responds to the many needs of students, assisting them and challenging them whether they have learning disabilities or are gifted learners. Working in conjunction with the Guidance Department, we offer a variety of services. Learning Strategies credit courses are offered at the Grade 9 and 10 levels. Personalized assistance is offered to improve study skills or to improve reading, writing, math or other skills. We are also a resource to teachers, helping them to develop programs for the special needs of students in their classes. Our aim is to challenge all students to achieve their full potential.

Educational Assistants

Youth Workers

Our youth workers are available on a daily basis to assist our students with personal and/or academic concerns. The Youth Workers’ office is located next to the Chaplain’s office. Appointments may be made through the Main Office or directly with the Youth Worker.

Guidance Counsellors

On request, the Guidance Office provides counselling assistance to students. The counsellor may deal with personal, career and/or academic concerns. All services of the Department are available by appointment or on a drop-in basis.

The guidance and career education department at Notre Dame is concerned first and foremost with transition. The guidance department made contact with our current student population when they were in grade 7 and helped ease their transition into high school. The career education portion of our portfolio is aimed at helping our current students transition their way to either a post-secondary institution, into an apprenticable trade or to join the world of work. Our students will have the opportunity to experience a wide variety of career choices through such programs as Co-operative Education, Ontario Youth Apprentice Program (OYAP) and Career Week. Academically, each student will take a Career Studies course in grade 10 and have the chance to take GLD20, a course aimed at discovering the workplace as well as GWL30, Designing your Future.

It is our hope that everyone has a place to go to when their high school career comes to an end. We encourage all parents to be in touch with us over the 4 plus years your child is here. It takes an effort on both of our parts to ensure future success for all of our graduates.

Mr. Kelly Baker
(Program Chair)

The school nurse will be in the school once a week. Students may wish to speak to her about a specific health problem or for counselling related to physical or mental well-being.
