After winning a decisive zone quarter final game against Stamford
86-16 the Notre Dame Fighting Irish Junior Girls focused on their
next victim which happened to be the E.L. Crossley Cyclones. The
Irish beat the Cyclones 52-46 in a game on November 12th, to advance
to the Zone Finals. The finals will be hosted in Dillon Hall at
3:30pm on Friday November 14th, where the Irish hope to take down
the Gators from Lakeshore. The Irish are looking to beat Lakeshore
this Friday and advance to play against the best in Southern
Ontario. Make sure you get out and support the girls who are
striving to win their zone and advance to SOSSA which takes place
next Wednesday, the 19th at AN Myer in the Falls. Good luck girls!! |
Irish’s Winning Weekend
By: Joe Caporicci and Chelsie McPherson
Oct. 28, 2008
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish had an exceptional weekend, winning
the biggest junior tournament in the province. The St. Thomas More
Invitational saw the Irish beat some of the top teams in the
province. Of the six teams that advanced to the championship round,
the Irish knocked off the third, first and then the second seeds in
the province. The Irish avenged their only loss this year by beating
that very team in the finals 37-35. Winning this tournament improves
the Irish’s season record to 20-1. This coming weekend the girls
will be playing in the St. Mary’s Tournament in Hamilton where they
will face many of the teams that appeared in their winning weekend.
Great work girls, we are very proud of you and congratulations to
Coach Fiocca; you are the best! |

Notre
Dame Junior Girls Basketball
By: Joe Caporicci
Oct. 24, 2008 The Notre Dame Junior Girls Basketball team coached by Mr. J. Fiocca
has opened their season with great success. Currently undefeated in
the league, the team of twelve has had some great success so far
this year. The Irish have begun a string of three straight weekends
participating in tournaments across the province; going as far as
Sarnia in early November. The result of the first tournament was
their first loss all year in the finals in Mississauga; placing a
strong second. Being first place in the league, the Irish have big
expectations for this year. Coach Mr. J. Fiocca’s ultimate goal is
to be playing at A.N Myer on November 19th in SOSSA. The Irish are
hoping to win their Zone, and have a strong showing in SOSSA. |

Notre Dame Senior Girls
Basketball Team

Oct. 24, 2008
The Notre Dame Girls Basketball Team, coached by Mr. Ferracuti and
Mrs. Breton, is performing quite well. Their season started on
September 2nd, and so far they have played 20 games, winning 12 and
losing 8. The season ends on November 17th, so they still have quite
a ways to go. Their last game was on Tuesday 21st against the
Stanford Hornets, where the Fighting Irish succeeded in a glorious
victory of 50-30. Their next game is on Friday the 24th, where the
girls will be squaring off against Sir Wilford Lauier. If everything
goes according to plan, MVP Sam Simons and the other 11 girls will
be ready for a match of a lifetime. Good Luck! |

Notre Dame Junior Boys’
Basketball
By: Brooke Labonté
November 14, 2008
Last year coaches Mr. Gallagher, Mr. Markovich and Mr. Biggar lead
the Junior Boys Basketball team to victory in four tournaments which
included the All-Ontario Catholic in Hamilton and Notre Dame’s own
tournament: the Blue and Gold Invitational. Jonathan Mataya
demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship landing him the MVP of the
2007/2008 season. With help from defensive player John Fitzgerald
they were able to end their season with an outstanding 33-3 record
and becoming ranked one of the top five Junior Boys’ Basketball
teams in all of Ontario. Irish Award Winners Dan Bellinaso and
Antonio Carbone displayed exceptional performances throughout the
season.
With the new season approaching and fifteen eager athletes, the
coaches are excited for the opening Mike Sullivan Memorial
tournament Thursday November 20th, and Friday November 21st at St.
Francis in St. Catharines. The best of luck goes out to the Fighting
Irish Junior Boys’ Basketball team as they climb their way to the
top. |
