To participate
fully in the society and workplace of the twenty-first
century, today's students will need to be able to use language
skillfully, confidently, and flexibly. The English curriculum
at Notre Dame College School offers a challenging program of
the highest quality, one that recognizes the central
importance of language and literature in learning and everyday
life and prepares students for the literacy demands they will
face as Canadians and members of the global community. Equally
important, it encourages students to develop a lifelong love
of reading and writing.
Our English courses are constructed around course-structuring
themes where all pieces of literature studied in a particular
course are weaved together thematically; thus, students are
able to make connections between their life experiences and
shared literary experiences. We hope students will come away
with a heightened understanding of their place in our world
shaped by their moral codes and our Catholic gospel values.
Ultimately, the goal of the English department is to help
foster in our students the true voice of America's greatest
female poet, Emily Dickinson: "to dwell in possibility."
